These two geniuses of 20th century painting though profoundly different in painting styles were united by an important and complex correspondence and were constantly listening to, and debating with, one another. Pierre Bonnard and Henri Matisse's works await us at the Vittoriano complex where over 200 drawings, watercolours, documents, letters, postcards, oils, sculptures and gouaches have been assembled. These two great artists and art lovers were inspired by the same themes - nature, landscapes and people - but they explored them in entirely different ways. Until 18 Feb: L'Iliade a Roma (The Iliad in Rome)
"Sing, goddess, the anger of Peleus' son Achilleus and its devastation, which put pains thousandfold upon the Achaians [...]." Thus begins one of the most famous poems in the world. This exhibition's intent is to be as faithful as possible to the original poem. Its first section is in fact made up of the work's so-called prodromes (premonitions), such as the Judgement of Paris. A beautiful gallery has been filled with gods and heroes, and another section dedicated to Greek and Trojan heroes. Finally the last section is dedicated to the strongest and most intense sequences of the poem; those that speak of love and war. The Iliad is a masterpiece that should be revisited often. Until 15 Feb h8,30-16,30; from 16 to 18 Feb h8,30-17. €11, reduced €6,50

This is one of the many pieces that provide evidence of the great diffusion of the cult of St Peter. This fragment, and a series of other materials and art-works, are exhibited in a show that commemorates the 500 years of the establishment of St Peter’s Basilica. The most prestigious museums in the world have lent works by Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Raphael, Michelangelo, Titian and El Greco for the occasion. The 140 objects and works of art assembled from museums in Rome, Vatican City and the rest of Italy, allow visitors a closer insight into the emblematic figure of the Pope.

Until 6 May: Annibale Carracci
An exhibition of 160 paintings and drawings by the Bolognese artist who lived and worked many years in Rome, as well as in Naples, Tuscany and Venice. Carracci perpetuates the dictates of the Italian Renaissance, creating highly realistic works characterised by a very decisive use of colour. The artist’s brush returns to the classical dictates of painting, reacting to the mannerist style of the period, while remaining firmly anchored to tradition. Tue-fri h10-20; sat h10-23; sun h10-21. €9, reduced €7

Museo di Villa Torlonia, via Nomentana, 70. Info 060606

One of the most beautiful villas in Rome and the last example of Roman cultural patronage - Villa Torlonia - has undergone major restoration. The gardens have been restored to their 17th century splendour with the addition of trees, shrubs, vases and a gazebo. The lake and hill in the grounds have been recreated and the paths have been rebuilt and adorned with statues and lamps. Architecturally too some major changes have been made to the villa. The Casino also hosts a permanent exhibition of "The Roman School" featuring 150 works by artists who lived and worked during the two world wars.

Museo Carlo Bilotti all'Aranciera di Villa Borghese, viale F. La Guardia. Info 0682059127
Until 11 Feb: Willem de Kooning. Late Paintings (The late paintings - Willem de Kooning)
Even though he persistently expressed his independence from the American expressionist movement, Willem de Kooning was one of its pillars and definitely influenced by its European counterpart. De Kooning was an extremely varied and prolific artist. Sixteen of his almost entirely abstract female nudes, landscapes and other works from the 1980s make up this show. The way the exhibition is laid out is designed to make visitors best appreciate these peaceful works that were born out of a period of chosen, happy and self-aware solitude. Tue-sun h9-19. €6, reduced €4

Until 18 Feb: Tra Oriente e Occidente (Between East and West)
This exhibition features etchings created using a vast range of different techniques and styles by the likes of Stanis Dessy, Mario Delitala, Bruno Bramanti and Moses Levi. The engravings all deal with the East as a subject matter; the East as both a geographic place and a metaphorical concept. Therefore we see landscapes as diverse as Algeria, Libya, Sardinia, and the Trentino and Tuscany regions. Eastern or Oriental here means rural, and is therefore a counterpoint to the urban. "Between East and West" posits a perspective in which progress is reversed; the model suggested here is a pastoral one. Tue-sat h10-19. Admission free

The year is 1759 and Charles III, Duke of Bourbon, leaves for Spain. This is the subject of Antonio Joli’s two paintings.
